![]() I'm excited to actually play today, but last night's experience really soured me on a game that I truly love. All thirty (thirty! thirty!) items of DLC began to install, and I jumped back into my training session. The store then informed me that I'd redeemed a code for thirty items, which seemed ridiculous, but I was already too fed up to care. God, wasn't that stupid of me?Īlready frustrated, I went to the PlayStation Store and punched in my code. I assumed that when I put the disc into my PS5, got the "Ultimate" title splash, and saw the highlighted characters in my roster, that meant I actually had the full game. See, MK11 Ultimate comes with Aftermath and both Fighter Packs released so far, which is kind of the reason I bought it. Nope! It was actually a code to essentially unlock half of the entire game. I thought it was just some extra skins, or a preorder bonus, or something to that effect. That's when, in the open case in front of me, I realized that the game came with a DLC voucher. No problem - I'd just mess around with Jade and Johnny in training mode, brush up on my combos, wait until the game's countdown finished, and then I could actually play. In fact, most of the characters weren't even installed yet. Then I realized something: playing online was greyed out. I got my title splash, confirming this was definitely the "Ultimate" version, and jumped right into the familiar menu. After all, what good's a next-gen release if it's got all the same last-gen problems?Īfter I put the disc into our PS5 last night, I plugged in my fight stick and sat down, ready to dust off my Johnny Cage and waste some newcomers online. I assumed this to not only meant a speedier install, but maybe even more stuff to do upfront so I could get to playing faster. I'm not a big fan of this approach, personally, but it's pretty par for the course at this point.īut the release of yesterday's Ultimate edition promised to be the definitive version of the game. You were limited to a few modes, and treated to a "hey, this isn't actually here yet" message when you tried to do most things. So let me explain it has the same system where you make money and buy monkeys, except you fully unlock all the tiers except the 5th which you will never get to in a game, not sure why that was changed. Well instead they kinda took out everything that made the first one fun to grind. Ok so I have been a fan of BTD since 4, and have played all the games following, BTD battles was such a great game, and really all that should have changed for the new one is the towers and upgrades, that’s it, tons of people would have played it, all the og guys would love it. I Yayy! Now this doesn't mean that you cant rush, i totally encourage it, as long as you do it right! Also one more thing, please, and i mean please nerf Jericho. All i want is a good long match and instead i get a bunch of regen rainbow blooms. And dont get me wrong, i know thats the point of the game, but its so annoying when they spam you, you can defend easily, and then they cant even take their own medicine when you spam them back. Not to mention that for people who want a good late game match, usually cant get that from the sheer amount of people with no skill sending rushes. Especially when you're launching it alongside juggernauts like Spider-Man 2 and Mario Wonder. SEGA could have launched Superstars without Denuvo and EGS and the situation would have still been the same. I don't think removing EGS or Denuvo will ever turn that needle around in a significant way. If we want to use successful games specifically on Steam, Cuphead, Ori, and Hollow Knight all did far better at lower price points. Using Mega Man 11 as a comp title again, that game launched with a $29.99 price tag and the price was never a major barrier of complaint for it. Doesn't matter how much any of the people that vouch for it enjoy it, the general public clearly didn't agree either. This game does not scream like it deserves the $60. I don't think the game is in danger of flop territory, but there was definitely a lot of money left on the table by releasing it at such a high price across all platforms. You can't really make much of its overall performance on other platforms. All you can really pull from these numbers is that the PC audience doesn't really care much for these type of titles. Mega Man 11 performed worse, yet it's the best selling Mega Man title in the entire franchise with 1.80 million units sold. Using Steam estimates for a multiplatform release doesn't paint a full picture. Just like Mania, the true numbers simply can't be reasonably estimated until we get an actual update from SEGA. Mania paints a doom and gloom picture, but like I argued in its favor before, Mania was an exceptional title. Yeah, same franchise but they target entirely different demographics. It makes sense that they're course correcting very quickly here to fix at least one big issue, and fast. Or at least it's a flop at launch with an overly high price. This is legitimate flop territory, even just relative to the other titles on one single platform. I realize 3rd party numbers won't tell the whole story, but comparing with other titles on the same platform should be a pretty accurate barometer. Price no doubt was a huge factor, and I do still think the game can do a lot better at a lower price point, but I don't know if it can overcome the hurdles it's already facing. The closest other recent major title to compare it to is Forces, which did do better over time, but not at launch. really bad numbers for a game that's less than a month old, honestly.
